MENU FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 13, 2013

I had one ticket on the big Mega Lotto for last night. $1 for a chance to win $190 million.  Cash like that could come in handy.  And I lucked out.  I had one of the numbers and the mega thing.

Worth $3 it is…..

Spring is still playing with us.  Unseasonal cold.  Rain.  Then two spectacular spring days.  Then it’s cold and the whole rotation starts all over again.  Hopefully this week we will stay  well above frost (not so last week).  So I have most of my stuff in or at least ready to go.

At this point we are already eating my lettuces and using my fresh herbs.   Both are a pleasure. I just wish we could do a real garden, but alas.  It’s people 0 woodchucks 1000.  Not even worth the effort anymore….

MENU FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 6, 2013

It would appear that we have gone from The Endless Winter to the  Eternal Monsoon Season.  On the other hand, everything has that bright new green look.  And when it does stop raining, the ground is so saturated  it makes the Spring weeding a  hell of a lot easier.

Warner has finished putting the water stain on the deck and  we have  pretty much arranged the pots.  Last frost date is this Weds., so I’ll start collecting seedlings in the  next few days. Main crop tomatoes, grape tomatoes, Italian parsley (lots), basil.  I have my rosemary, sage and mint.  Am looking for a decent sized thyme.

Pricing stuff  this week I found geraniums locally costing $4-$5 a pop. Ouch.  I did, however, find that Home Depot has smaller plants for $1.95.  Guess where I am going for those…

MENU FOR APRIL 29, 2013

Spring is a real bitch this  year.  She tempts us with a glorious sunny day then returns to weather – cold, damp and perhaps in the 50s. I fear that after a bit more, she will bail out and turn the weather over to the  gods of Air Conditioning leaving us with very little time to luxuriate in a great Springtime....

Taking advantage of a day that was too chilly to work outside we bit the bullet and defrosted both freezers.  We have come to the conclusion that we have too much food in there and will be trying to pull stuff out more than once a week.  Eating leftover here is not a chore…Last night’s Pot Roast (perfect for the weather) and this  afternoon’s Gumbo as examples.

MENU FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 15, 2013

Yesterday I went out and bought a flat of lettuce seedlings and a flat of large pansies – that glorious bright spring yellow. Today it is too damned cold and damp to go out and plant them.   I wish spring would just settle in and let us be rewarded for that awful winter.

I noted that I wrote about the flowering shrubs and fruit trees in the last blog of March. This year we are just approaching that status. And of course, this time last year we were in Tampa which makes a difference as well.

I think that when I win a big Lotto payoff  I will arrange to be somewhere else from early January until the  end of April.  One could almost finance this by the savings on ones Con Ed bill….
